With the election of a new Government in the summer of 2024, we – along with more than 40 other organisations working across Greater Manchester to support people whose lives are impacted by national immigration laws - signed onto a document produced by GMIAU, asking all our MPs to:
- Listen to people with lived experience of immigration controls;
- Speak out about the importance of welcome, safety, justice, home and support for all Greater Manchester residents, regardless of immigration status;
- Be accountable in achieving this reality for our city-region.
Local politicians have committed to make Greater Manchester a place ‘where everybody can have a good life, growing up, getting on and growing old in a greener, fairer, more prosperous city region.’
But unfortunately, our experience has shown us that national immigration laws, which disproportionately affect people based on race, class and gender, make it harder and near impossible for the people we work with to have a good life.
The document sets out the expectations we have of our city-region MPs and we will continue to use it in the months ahead to advocate with and for people in Greater Manchester who are subject to immigration controls.
