One of our objectives at Boaz is to equip people who want to support people seeking asylum and another is to campaign and work towards a more just asylum process. To do both of these things it's really important that we get our facts straight and that we speak truth into situations where we need to.
Myth busting alone won't change hearts, minds and policies, but it can sometimes help! We're really grateful to Refugee Council who regularly produce summaries of the latest Home Office asylum and immigration statistics.
Did you know...
- 26,547 asylum applications were made in the year ending March 2019? This is 8% fewer than 2017-18
- 39% of asylum decisions made during the last year were positive grants of protection (either refugee status or humanitarian protection)
- the number of people waiting for a decision on their initial application has risen to 30,247- which is sadly a record high
