This week is Poverty and Homelessness Action Week and we’re joining with loads of organisations around the country to pray and take action for those facing social and economic barriers in our nation. Here at Boaz we’re focusing on destitute asylum seekers and refugees, who as you may well know, experience barriers to accessing the things many of us take for granted each day.

Today we focus on… stigmatisation

Pray for good relationships within the media, local churches, national organisations and government, and for a turning of the tide in the way asylum issues are presented and understood. Please pray particularly for those doing positive work in this field, for courage and wisdom in what is often a very hostile environment!

Take action by visiting the NCADC website, writing to your local MP or visit the City of Sanctuary website to see if your town is part of this movement for change!

Today we focus on… mental health

The majority of destitute asylum seekers struggle with mental health problems, sometimes as a result of their experiences in their country of origin (for instance, post-traumatic stress disorder, or memory loss due to trauma) as well as experiences of destitution, exploitation and rejection in the UK, often due to the unjust and inhumane treatment they have faced.

Pray for our clients facing desperate and often uncertain situations, for peace, openness and courage. And please pray for our support workers, Vicky, Ros and Nigel, as they respond to the needs of our clients.

Act today by visiting the campaigns centre on the Freedom From Torture website, or by donating to our work…

We’re really excited that a team of 15 volunteers from St Mary’s Church in Sale, Manchester, will be joining the Boaz Trust next week for their annual mission week.

The team (which will be different each day) is going to be doing loads of different stuff, including DIY in some of our houses, helping with the monthly Free Shop, running a coffee morning (with an African music workshop and more!) and taking clients out on day trips.

They are also running our biggest Boaz Dinner Party on Saturday 29th October, with an estimated 100 guests, which is amazing. We’re very grateful to them for their interest and enthusiasm about working with asylum seekers, and can’t wait to see what next week will bring!

With the Boaz Dinner Party initative, you can choose when you have your dinner party, choose who comes, choose what you eat, choose where you have it, but the most important thing is, you can choose to raise money for Boaz at the same time!

We’ve even gone to the effort of making place names and official invitations for you, with a brief blurb about what we’re trying to do and why we think it’s important. So don’t worry if you don’t feel like you know enough about asylum issues- we’ve got it covered.

Since we began back in 2004, hosting destitute asylum seekers has been a major part of our provision. It is particularly significant in emergency cases or for more vulnerable clients.

Boaz hosts generously offer their spare rooms as a safe place for an asylum seeker to stay for days, weeks or even months. It is a truly remarkable and life-saving service and we’re very grateful to each and every one!

Our network is currently operating at capacity, with 10 clients being accommodated in this way. As a result, we’re looking to expand our hosting network to enable us to help a greater number of vulnerable people.

If you would like to find out more about hosting with Boaz please join us for a Hosting Information Evening on Monday 17th October at 7.30 p.m. at 110 Oldham Road, Ancoats M4 6AG.

For further details or to let us know that you are planning to come, please contact Cat Arundale on 0161 202 1056, or email her by clicking here.

Finally, please feel free to download one of our info posters to display in your church or community centre! Just click on this link for the PDF copy (or contact Cat to get one sent out):

We were delighted that Kate Green MP visited Boaz during the summer months. Here’s what she says about her visit, and the work of Boaz in general:

‘I was very pleased to visit Boaz Trust to learn about their work with destitute asylum seekers. It’s morally right that we should care properly for asylum seekers while they are here among us. Yet too often they receive the poorest of welcomes, facing poverty and hardship, an unfriendly bureaucracy, scepticism, and hostility. I commend Boaz for their humanity, their energy, and their commitment in offering support to the most vulnerable and destitute.’

Thanks Kate! It’s great to meet MPs who really care about vulnerable individuals in society.
